Chamber Minutes
Wisner Area Chamber of Commerce Minutes
July 30, 2008

President Nadine Hagedorn called the meeting to order at 12 P.M.  There were 11 members and 5
guests in attendance.

Nadine Hagedorn asked all in attendance to introduce themselves and briefly identify the entity they
represented.

The minutes of the June 25, 2008 meeting as emailed and provided as a handout were reviewed.
Motion to accept was made by Kris Brahmer with second by Lee Myers.  No further discussion, motion
carried.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Secretary/Treasurer Peggy Liermann with a handout showing year
to date transaction history and with the total of all accounts as of July 28, 2008.  The handout is made a
part of these minutes by reference. A motion to accept was made by Layne Matthes, second by Tim
Springer.  No further discussion, motion carried.

UPDATE ON 2008 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE  Peggy Liermann reported that she received membership dues
from one previous member, there are now 61 paid members and 6 former members who had not yet
paid the 2008 dues.

WCD UPDATE  - Lee Myers reported that he has spoken with several people including the Lt. Governor
regarding a regional jail.  This is something that has never been done in the State of Nebraska before,
four counties working together for a regional jail facility.  This project is on going.
Lee is also working with a group of individuals on the Pilger Rest Area which was closed on January
1, 2008 and is still barricaded to travelers.  Stanton County owns the property and needs to have a non-
profit manage it for them.  This project is ongoing.

OLD BUSINESS:
CHAMBER CALENDAR 2009
– Cindy Goeller was not present so the update will be presented at the next
meeting.

THUNDER BY THE RIVER – AUGUST 15 AND 16  Scott Krusemark asked the Chamber for help in getting
the 4-wheel vehicles allowed to drive to main street in order to dine and frequent other businesses.
Most of the people who participate as pullers do not have “on the road” type vehicles and depend on 4-
wheelers for transportation from the park.  Lee Myers advised that Nebraska Law does not allow 4-
wheelers on highways or streets.  The City of Wisner would have to approve any barricading of any part
of a street or designating an off road vehicle path.  Lee will present the problem at the City Council
meeting being held on Monday, August 4th.  Layne Matthes suggested that the shuttle being run on
Thursday evening/night might be an alternative.  Scott advised that the main focus is trying to get the
competitors uptown to take advantage of the businesses particularly the eating establishments, etc.
Scott also said that the recruitment of sponsors went very well.  The trailer went to West Point and will
remain there during the Cuming County Fair as an advertisement.
Jen Stuhr asked for help in getting volunteers for taking tickets.  Kris Brahmer volunteered to contact
Chamber members and others to recruit volunteers.
Scott Krusemark said that the VIP tents will remain open during all events.
Welcome packs including the Wisner brochure will be made available to the competitors,
approximately 150 will be needed.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION HONORING MICK JENSEN AND TIM GARRIGAN OF GREAT PLAINS
COMMUNICATIONS
– Layne Matthes gave a brief introductory talk about Mick and Tim and Great Plains
Communications (GPC).  Layne met Mick Jensen in 1985 and during that time has appreciated all the
efforts Mick has made on behalf of the communities, including scholarships and support to each
community they serve.
Tim Garrigan was not able to be present, Mick accepted certificates for himself and Tim from the Wisner
Chamber of Commerce presented by Nadine Hagedorn, Wisner Community Development presented
by Lee Myers, Village of Bancroft and Bancroft Betterment presented by Jennifer Carlson and Janice
Konicek and Village of Beemer and Beemer Community Club presented by Laurie Lierman.  All
communities praised Great Plains and all its staff for the on-going participation in their respective
communities each declaring that we are very fortunate to have a company such as Great Plains in our
towns.  Mick received each certificate with much thanks and stated that of all the things he and Tim have
in their offices the certificates would be the most valuable to them.
Mick gave a brief history of Great Plains which was started by Emory Hunt.  In the 1930’s when money
was scarce Mr. Hunt accepted items on a barter system instead of payment for services, many times
the items bartered would not be sufficient to cover a bill, but all was considered as payment in full.  GPC
has continued to be a service oriented company.  It is a family business, many employees are 4th
generation, and the goal is to maintain this type of organization for at least 2 more generations.  The
company will celebrate its 100th year in 2011.
Great Plains Communications has been active in the Nebraska Renaissance for the past 3 years.  This
organization shares a belief that the best way to ensure the entire state of Nebraska is a vital area well
into the 21st century is to keep our small communities thriving.   Currently they have dues of $35,000
and a USDA grant for $50,000.  Their membership includes several chambers, colleges and
universities, State Senators and many others.  An RFP will be presented in November on what
Nebraska needs to prosper, watch your newspapers in November.

TEACHER’S SOCIAL BEGINNING SCHOOL YEAR 2008/09 –  As Alan Harms was not present, Nadine
Hagedorn reported that all has been arranged.  The Chamber and School board will co-sponsor this
family social event, RSVP to Jaye Liermann at 529-3248.  After discussion Kris Brahmer made a motion
to have a sundae bar after the meal sponsored by the Chamber, Lee Myers second.  There was no
further discussion and the motion was carried.

PLANNING FOR CHRISTMAS PROMOTION – Nadine Hagedorn reported on behalf of Sally Harms and
Doris Podany that there are 10 confirmed living windows.  Lavonne Harron advised that the Wisner Care
Center will volunteer to do the soup meal.  It has been suggested that the living windows be active
during the hours of 11:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. in order to take advantage of the foot traffic on main street,
that there be punch cards of some kind at each window display with a special drawing that winners
need not be present to win.  More will be reported at the next meeting.  Again the theme this year is the
Night Before Christmas.

2009 FARM AND HOME SHOW PLANNING – JANUARY 17, 2009 –  Nadine Hagedorn reported that the
letters will be going out early August to all former booth holders.  Kris Brahmer confirmed that Triple A
had been contacted and the City Auditorium has been reserved.

DOWNTOWN BEAUTIFICATION – Kris Brahmer reported that she has been having ongoing dialog with
the State of Nebraska.  Kris will report when she has additional information.

COMMUNITY SIGN – COMMUNITY EVENTS –  Lee Myers has received positive feedback on the two
bright yellow signs in the Hollman and former Lumberyard windows.  These signs are vinyl and can be
reused so we need to be deciding what to put on them.  The next events will be the Christmas
promotion, the Farm & Home Show and then St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

NEW BUSINESS:
TAYLOR SCHULTZ & ERICA LEWIS FUNDRAISER
– AUGUST 1ST Nadine Hagedorn advised that these
two Middle School youth had been chosen to attend the People to People World Leadership Forum in
Washington D.C. and were having a fundraiser.  After discussion it was decided that the Chamber
would need to review and have further discussion on the matter to establish guidelines for making
contriubutions.  Since the parameters are not established, no donation will be made at this time.

MISCELLANEOUS – Lee Myers made a motion that the Great Nebraska Tractor Ride be encouraged to
begin/end in Wisner in 2009, second by Peggy Liermann.  Discussion indicated that Wisner would
probably be the start/end point as long as a different route could be platted for each year.  No further
discussion, motion carried.
Nadine Hagedorn suggested we consider having a “dutch treat” meeting to bring together all the
communities to put together a calendar for all events and then make the calendar available on the
Internet.  The web site would be hosted by Wisner Area Chamber of Commerce.  Think about it and it
will be discussed at the next meeting.

NEXT MEETING – Discussion was had as to whether an August meeting was necessary.  Kris Brahmer
made a motion to not have an August meeting and to have the September meeting on the last
Wednesday of the month,
September 24th, at 8:00 A.M. to accommodate the youth, second by Tim
Springer.  No further discussion, motion carried.  The next meeting will be on Wednesday, September
24, 2008 at 8:00 A.M. at Coachmen’s.

ADJOURNMENT – Kris Brahmer made a motion to adjourn, second by Todd Wuestewald.  No
discussion, motion carried.  The meeting was adjourned by Nadine Hagedorn at 1:10 P.M.

Respectfully submitted:
Peggy Liermann, Secretary/Treasurer 7/30/08
